Thoughts on work

My work life is about reading emails and replying emails.
How exciting that can be!

Thoughts on my career

When I was still in uni, I wanted to be a career woman and better still, someone who can balance work and home life well enough. I believe in my ability to do that. However, after working for about 2 years plus, my thinking seems to have changed. I suddenly don’t feel like working and would rather stay at home. Or I can still work but in a no- brainer job with regular stable hours and a fat paycheck. That sounds really nice.

I do think I have a good job now, with very regular stable hours, a job that requires not much use of my brains (not as much as studying or analyzing though) and quite a fat paycheck. Though the pay can be much better but with my lack of experience, I do think the paycheck is sufficient. Anyway, God tells us to be contented and I am with the money, at the moment. Haha. Also, I realized how precious working regular hours is and that there is no need to stay back late. It’s great to go home, have dinner, laze around and relax.

The only things I dislike about my job are that I need not use my brains and the lack of interaction. I guess I always wanted to feel at home in my workplace, such that I work in a place I can call my work “home”, with people I can relate to, with people who are open-minded and close-knit. This is the only thing that is lacking now. Perhaps the “grass is greener on the other side” syndrome is setting in.

Comparatively, my previous pay was quite low and the working hours longer. I remembered I used to complain a lot about other colleagues who don’t do their jobs well or use PR to their advantage or just normal complaining. Now I don’t. Which is a relief, because I realized all that complaining zapped a lot of energy from me and most of my colleagues were in the same situation too. That happens when the company is extremely big, I guess. However, it is also in a big/ bigger than mine current company where you get the “homely” feeling and the camaraderie, close-knit feeling because of the common activities like company/ department/ section dinners or award ceremonies or even annual report briefings, training courses or even self-organised activities. I used to think that people didn’t matter, only what you want in your career. Now I know that the people you work with, plays an extremely important factor in making your worklife miserable or pleasant. At least for me, that is.

Or perhaps it’s just the people and culture in my company. Perhaps I never really got over it and adapted here. People here do their own work, do their own stuff and never bother about others. They don’t even lunch together. They stand on the left and right side in the lift and never intruding into each other’s space, even if they knew each other. That’s weird. Perhaps there are too many foreigners (70% ang mohs, some indies, japs, koreans, etc) that a common identity is never existent.

Perhaps I should do other stuff during my lunch-time and use it effectively to settle my personal things like paying bills, checking up on something, buying things, etc. Or perhaps one day I will find something very suited to my liking in terms of the job scope, pay, people and company values. Perhaps then I will stay long term and really develop my career.

Post V-Day thoughts

Valentine’s Day came and went. Not a person to celebrate such commercialized occasions, I nevertheless paused to think about romantic love and how it changes people’s lives.

When a person truly loves you… The feeling of love would be wonderfully sweet and heartwarming.

You can feel it in the way he looks at you with adoring eyes.
You can feel it when he pulls you into his arms tenderly.
You can feel it when he interlocks your fingers with his.
You can feel it too when he grabs your hand for your safety while crossing the roads.
You can feel it when he strokes your hair lightly and lovingly.
You can feel it even with a light dry kiss on the lips.
You can feel it in the way he cares for you.
You can see it in the way he smiles delightedly when he sees you.
And last but not least, you can see it in the way he playfully winks at you!!

I am glad he is a part of my life and I hope he would be, forever.

Bangkok trip 2006 part 2

Besides food, the main purpose of me going to Bangkok is to go shopping, of course. It was really a “shop till you drop” trip. Pratunam market and Chatuchek market were really hot places with lots of cheap bargains while Central Chidlom, Central World Plaza were upmarket shopping centres, nothing much to buy there. MBK and Siam Square are shopping centres too but more like our Far East Plaza and suburban malls, just that they house more unique stuff. One good place to visit is Suan Lom night market, if you don’t like to go Chatuchek. Suam Lom is cool at night and trendy and carry most stuff that Chatuchek has. The variety and prices cant beat Chatuchek though as this market is more of a touristy place.

Anyway, let me list down what I bought and don’t be too shocked!!

5-6 tops, 4-5 bottoms, 3 pairs of pointed toe shoes (very nice & cheap $8-$12!!), 9 pairs of earrings, at least 5 types of funky necklaces, some bracelets, 4 t-shirts & 1 chain for my brother, 2 shirts & 1 belt for my dad, a nightie for my mum and last but not least titbits!! Most of my stuff cost less than $15 per piece. On hindsight, it doesn’t seem like a lot of stuff. I could have bought more but my feet were crying out for mercy at the end of each day.

All in all, I spent approx $500+ so converted to baht should be about 12,000 baht. But I spent at most $450, including airport taxes. Haha. Also, this amount of course includes food and transport. I even had enough money to lend some of my friends who had not enough. Haha. Thank goodness I changed all money in Singapore and need not go through the hassle of looking for a money changer. The rate in Thailand isn’t as good as Singapore, or rather the moneychanger that I went to. Hehe. So, I got a very good rate!! Yoohoo…

To conclude, it was a good trip, bonding with my church friends, shopping and eating and exploring. Last but not least, when I got back, I had a lovely Valentine’s surprise! He came to meet me or welcome me back as he terms it, at the airport even though it was slightly past midnight. So sweet. Hehe.

Bangkok trip 2006 part 1

It was 4 tiring days of shopping in Bangkok but it was satisfying. Why? I got to shop alot and buy stuff for myself, my dad, mum and brother and my cousin. Plus some titbits too. Quite an accomplishment, isn't it? Hehe...

Anyway, another sense of satisfaction was that the itinerary (planned by me, of course). I am glad the rest of the others followed it happily and also agreed it was good planning. At least the shopping activities were consolidated in one area at a time, so we did not have to rush here and there.

All in all, we managed to visit:
  1. Pratunam Market/ Baiyoke Market/ Indra Square
  2. Central World Plaza/ Zen/ Isetan
  3. Chatuchek Market
  4. Central Chidlom
  5. MBK
  6. Suan Lom night market
  7. Siam Square/ Centre

Doesn't seem like many places but with about 3.5 days of shopping there, it is quite enough!!

In addition, we ate lots of local Thai food everyday, to our tummys' satisfaction. "Tom Yum Goong", "Thai Beef Noodles", "Sticky Rice with Mango", "Paad Thai", etc. It was simply delicious & yummy! One good recommendation is the MBK food court, which houses all kinds of food from Thai to international. We instinctively headed for Thai food and it was with unanimous agreement that this food court had the best food we had since tasted in shopping centres or markets.

Another recommendation is this stewed chicken rice noodles in Chatuchek market. We observed for some time that this particular stall had the most customers - it was packed and people were all waiting. We decided to wait for an empty table too and we were rewarded! The noodles were simply delicious and they actually gave us a big chicken drumstick. It probably cost less than 2 SIN dollars for a bowl. But boy, I am still salivating when I think of this bowl of noodles. All my companions finished their food, including the soup! Hehe.. Yum Yum..

There was also this slightly more upmarket place we went to, called "Food Loft" at Central Chidlom. It was "Marche"- style local and international food. More expensive than normal food courts or roadside stalls but it's worth spending the money here. The local and international food is good, dining experience relaxed and comfortable and most of all, aircon!!

The feeling of hatred

I have a former "love-hate" friend. Now he has became a hated friend. I know I shouldn't hate but it's just too much to forgive just yet.

Short, selfish, arrogant, inattentive, know-it-all, trumpet-blowing attention seeker. I hate you. I want you to feel hurt, I want you to feel guilty but you will never see the point anyway. So I never want your friendship nor see you again.

How can you say you like me if you don’t understand my personality?
How can you say you like me if you don’t allow me to retain my own individuality?
How can you say you like me if you forget the important events in my life?
How can you say you like me if you insist on your way and don’t bother to think from my point of view?
How can you say you like me if you don't respect my views?
How can you say you like me if you don’t listen but only hear what I say?
How can you say you like me if you never pay proper attention to me?
How can you say you like me if you always put your interests before mine?
How can you say you like me if you tell my secrets to your friends?
How can you say you like me if you are just trying to get a relationship?
How can you say you like me if you are so full of yourself?
How cay you say you like me if you are so selfish?

Buzz off. Don't say I did you wrong, you never treated me sincerely. I am not obliged to accept you.

Stop asking me to start anew this friendship.
Stop making light of hurtful things you said and did.

"Sorry" does not cure. "you never meant to hurt" does not cure either.
Stop justifying your actions with reasons. You are not acknowledging my concerns.

Simon Tan SN, you suck!
